Parliamentary Deadlock Persists Amid Opposition Uproar
Both Houses of Parliament were adjourned on November 27, 2024, due to intense opposition protests over the Adani controversy and violence in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal. In the Lok Sabha, disruptions began during Question Hour, with Opposition members storming the Well and raising slogans, leading to an early adjournment by BJP member Dilip Saikia, who was in the chair. Similarly, in the Rajya Sabha, protests resumed after Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar rejected 18 Rule 267 notices demanding a suspension of scheduled business to discuss issues like the Adani Group’s alleged misconduct, Sambhal violence, and rising crime.
Mr. Dhankhar emphasized adherence to parliamentary traditions while rejecting the notices. Despite the Adani Group denying violations of the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, opposition calls for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe remained steadfast. The disruptions echoed similar adjournments on November 25, highlighting the escalating tension in Parliament.
