Protests Turn Violent in Islamabad Over Imran Khan’s Detention

Supporters of former Pakistani premier Imran Khan clashed with security forces in Islamabad on November 26, 2024, demanding his release from prison. At least six people, including four security personnel and one civilian, were killed in the violence, while dozens were injured, including journalists attacked by protesters. Demonstrators breached lockdown measures, ramming vehicles into security forces, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the actions as targeting law enforcement.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi threatened live fire in response to armed attacks by protesters. Authorities detained over 4,000 Khan supporters, suspended mobile internet services, and imposed travel restrictions to curb unrest. Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, urged peaceful marches but warned of alternate plans if her husband’s release was not secured. Meanwhile, PTI activists continued to mobilize via social media despite severe disruptions. The protests occurred as Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko visited Pakistan, adding further strain to the volatile situation.
