Tharoor Appeals for Severe Calamity Declaration for Wayanad Landslides
In response to the devastating landslides that struck Wayanad on July 30, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to declare the disaster a “calamity of severe nature” under MPLADS guidelines. The landslides, which occurred in Mundakkai and Churalmala, have claimed over 167 lives and left extensive damage in their wake.
Tharoor’s appeal aims to facilitate urgent financial support from MPs to assist in relief and rehabilitation efforts. The disaster has overwhelmed local resources, with ongoing rescue operations by armed forces and the construction of a vital Bailey bridge to reconnect affected areas. Tharoor’s request underscores the need for coordinated, substantial aid to address the massive scale of destruction and support recovery efforts.
