Workers Protest Against Privatization of Waste Management in Chennai’s Thiru. Vi. Ka. Nagar and Royapuram Zones
Over 150 conservancy workers protested in Ambattur against the Greater Chennai Corporation’s (GCC) decision to privatize solid waste management in Thiru. Vi. Ka. Nagar and Royapuram. The workers, who were not informed about the privatization plan, fear a reduction in salaries and lack of job security.
The resolution, passed by the Council, allows private agencies to handle waste collection, potentially lowering salaries from ₹21,000 to ₹15,000. Advocates argue that privatization avoids making workers permanent and compromises their benefits. Protesters demand salary hikes in line with Government Order 62 of the Labour Department.
