Allegations of Torture Surface After Man’s Death at De-Addiction Centre in Tamil Nadu
The family of Vasanthakumar, a 36-year-old carpenter from Pulianthope, Tamil Nadu, has filed a complaint alleging that torture at a de-addiction centre led to his death. Admitted on May 9, Vasanthakumar was found dead on May 27 with injury marks suggesting abuse. His family claims they were denied communication with him and received scant information from the centre.
The Maduravoyal police have registered a case under Section 174 of the CrPC, pending a postmortem report. CPI(M) leader G. Selva has called for an investigation and stricter oversight of private de-addiction centres to ensure compliance with government regulations and protect patients’ rights.
