Supreme Court Commends Railways for Advancing Rail Safety Measures
In a significant development, the Supreme Court has lauded the Railways for its proactive steps towards enhancing rail safety, particularly the implementation of the indigenous anti-collision system, Kavach. The court, headed by Justice Surya Kant, expressed appreciation for the measures undertaken by the Ministry of Railways, as detailed in a status report submitted by Attorney General R. Venkataramani.
The hearing, initiated following a petition filed in the aftermath of a tragic train collision in Odisha involving thousands of passengers, underscored the urgency of improving rail safety protocols. Developed in 2002 by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), Kavach holds promise in mitigating the risk of collisions and enhancing passenger safety. Despite initial concerns regarding technical challenges, the Railways’ commitment to implementing Kavach demonstrates a significant stride towards bolstering rail safety infrastructure.
