Government Employees Defer Strike Amid Pension Scheme Restoration Discussions

The Joint Forum for Restoration of Old Pension Scheme (JFROPS), representing government employees, has opted to postpone the indefinite strike slated to begin on May 1, which is aimed at reinstating the old pension scheme. Following discussions with top government officials, including Union Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba and Union Finance Secretary T.V. Somanathan, the decision to defer the strike was made.

The government officials requested more time to consult with states and various departments before deciding on restoring the old pension scheme. JFROPS convener Shiva Gopal Mishra agreed with this proposal, highlighting the government’s assurance of actively working towards resolving the issue at the earliest. The Somanathan Committee, tasked with reviewing the pension system, has been engaging with JFROPS representatives and is actively considering the matter in consultation with state governments, as per a circular issued by the Finance Ministry.
