Chennai’s Voting Challenge: Combating Urban Apathy and Floating Population
J. Radhakrishnan, District Election Officer, and Greater Corporation Commissioner, highlighted the persistent issue of low voter turnout in Chennai, attributing it to the city’s large floating population and widespread urban apathy. Despite Tamil Nadu’s average voting rate of 72%, Chennai typically lags at 58-59%, presenting a significant challenge. Efforts are underway to address this trend and achieve 100% voting by raising awareness through initiatives like the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) program. With electoral rolls encompassing all eligible applicants aged 18 and above by April 2024, officials aim to engage the community, particularly youth, in the upcoming Lok Sabha Election scheduled to commence on April 19.
