Utilizing Abandoned Quarries for Water Management near Chennai

A recent study by Anna University and IIT-Madras proposes an innovative approach to water management near Chennai by diverting water from the Chembarambakkam reservoir to abandoned quarries. This strategy aims to reduce evaporation loss and enhance water supply to urban areas while mitigating floods. The study, titled ‘Innovative Water Management Using Abandoned Quarries for Urban Water Supply and Flood Mitigation,’ suggests that the combined capacity of quarries in Sikkarayapuram and Erumaiyur could store a significant amount of water.

By prioritizing the utilization of these quarries over filling up main reservoirs, the study aims to minimize evaporation loss, particularly during the summer season. The proposed diversion strategies from the reservoir to quarries demonstrate promising results in improving domestic water supply and reducing surplus water release during heavy rains, offering a sustainable solution to water management challenges in the region.
