N.S. Madhavan’s Dedication to Malayalam Dialects

Renowned writer N.S. Madhavan emphasizes his commitment to Malayalam dialects, attributing them as the cornerstone of his literary prowess. Despite the opportunity to pursue a writing career in English after his maiden short story’s success, Madhavan remains devoted to Malayalam, citing its nuanced expressions and cultural richness as essential to his writing style.

Speaking at the Kottakkakam Residents Association Festival of Thought (KRAFT), Madhavan reflects on his formative years in Thirupunithura, where he developed a special ear for Malayalam dialects and found intellectual nourishment in the vibrant cultural milieu. He discusses his acclaimed works, including “Litanies of Dutch Battery,” revealing the organic evolution of his narratives and expressing admiration for actor Mammootty’s reinvention in later years.
