NGT Criticizes Tangedco for Delay in Replacing Leaky Ash Pipelines in Ennore

The National Green Tribunal’s southern bench has expressed dissatisfaction over the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) and the North Chennai Thermal Power Station’s laxity in replacing leaky ash pipelines in Ennore Creek. The Tribunal had earlier set a deadline for the replacement of ash slurry disposal line pipes by June 2022, aiming to address environmental concerns.

However, only one out of the four designated pipelines has been replaced. Tangedco cited difficulties in finalizing tenders for the delay, mentioning that the specialized Cast basalt-lined pipes are not readily available. The Tribunal criticized the lack of proactive efforts from Tangedco and emphasized the importance of addressing the issue promptly to prevent further contamination of the wetland and marine life.
