India Aims for 300 Million Domestic Air Passengers by 2030

India’s Civil Aviation Minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia, announced that the country’s domestic air passenger traffic is expected to reach 300 million by 2030. The minister addressed the Wings India 2024 event in Hyderabad, highlighting the sector’s growth from 60 million passengers in 2014 to 145 million pre-Covid and 153 million in 2023.

Despite this anticipated growth, Scindia emphasized that India would still have significant room for expansion, with current penetration at 3-4%, expected to rise to 10-15%. He outlined plans to create capacities, remove bottlenecks, and simplify procedures to support the aviation sector and contribute to India’s target of a $20 trillion economy by 2047.

Scindia also noted India’s position as the third-largest domestic civil aviation market and seventh-largest international market globally. The country aims to increase its fleet from 713 to over 2,000 aircraft in the next decade, with an additional 50 airports, waterdromes, and heliports expected by 2030.
