India and Bangladesh Open New Chapter in Bilateral Relations, Aiming for Closer Ties
Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma, in a meeting with Bangladesh’s newly-elected Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud, highlighted the opening of a new chapter in bilateral relations between the two nations. Verma expressed the commitment to work more closely to advance ties. Discussions covered the advancements made in the last decade and potential future cooperation, including addressing climate issues and supporting Bangladesh’s plan for a smart Bangladesh by 2041.
Mahmud acknowledged India’s consistent support for democratic continuity in Bangladesh during previous national elections. He also expressed interest in his first overseas trip to India, with discussions focusing on connectivity, border haats, and trade expansion. They explored the possibility of trade transactions in Bangladeshi taka and Indian rupee to reduce dependency on the dollar and facilitate trade expansion.
