HR&CE Department Seeks GST Waiver for Temple Renovation Funds in Villages and Adi Dravida Localities
The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department is set to appeal to the Central Government for a waiver from the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on grants allocated for the renovation of temples in Adi Dravida habitations and those classified as village temples. HR&CE Minister P.K. Sekarbabu mentioned that the one-time grant of ₹2 lakh per temple for renovations incurs an 18% GST, amounting to ₹35,000.
Seeking relief, the department aims to utilize the full grant amount for temple improvements, including constructing kitchens, main mandapams, compound walls, or undertaking necessary repairs. The appeal comes in response to numerous requests from temples seeking exemption from the GST amount.
