Chennai Corporation Council Advocates Compensation for Ennore Oil Spill Affected Fisherfolk

During a Council meeting at the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), councillors raised various concerns and demands, including compensation for fishermen affected by the oil spill in Ennore. Councillor K.P. Chokkalingam stressed the need for the private agency responsible for the oil spill to provide compensation to fishermen in the affected coastal districts.

Another councillor, M. Renuka, emphasized the necessity of a contingency plan by the State government to address oil spills and prevent future incidents. The discussion also touched on the recent ammonia gas leak from Coromandel International Limited, prompting calls for a thorough assessment of the leaked chemicals and the implementation of monitoring mechanisms for industries in the area.

Additional requests included the appointment of an official to study the Ennore area and control inundation, the incorporation of climate-adaptive infrastructure in line with U.N. recommendations, and the study of the flood mitigation system in Kuala Lumpur for potential implementation in Chennai. Complaints about road damages and delays in response from online-contracted roadwork were also voiced, with the GCC committing to repair 5,000 roads in the coming months.
