Protest Against Fertilizer Plant in Periyakuppam Continues After Ammonia Leak
Residents of Periyakuppam and surrounding villages in Ennore entered the second day of their protest against Coromandel International Limited, demanding the permanent closure of the fertilizer plant. The company had been temporarily shut down after an ammonia leak from its pipeline caused 55 people to be hospitalized. The strong odor from the leak prompted evacuations and left residents with throat irritation and giddiness.
Protestors expressed dissatisfaction with the company’s lack of communication about the leak and its failure to provide transportation and ambulances. The protesters vowed to continue their sit-in until the government takes decisive action. The Ward 2 councilor, S. Gomathi, has urged the Chief Minister to close the fertilizer factory permanently.
A collective named ‘Ennore People’s Protection Group,’ consisting of 32 villages, has been formed to press for the permanent closure of the company, and residents plan to file petitions in the National Green Tribunal to address ongoing concerns about toxic emissions.
