Chennai Corporation Advances Biomining Project for Perungudi Dump Site Rejuvenation
The Greater Chennai Corporation is making significant progress in its biomining project aimed at clearing legacy waste from the Perungudi dump site. Expected to be completed by June 2024, the biomining process has already processed approximately 77% of the accumulated legacy waste, spanning 30.62 lakh cubic meters in 2019.
With a sanctioned fund of ₹350.64 crore under the Swachh Bharat Mission scheme, the Corporation, in collaboration with the Centre for Environmental Science, Anna University, is overseeing the project. Upon completion, the Corporation plans to utilize 44 acres of reclaimed land for various processing facilities, including a 500 TPD Bio-Compressed Natural Gas plant, a 500 TPD windrow compost yard, and a 1200 TPD Automated Material Recovery Facility.
Additionally, proposals for an Eco-Park or a Miyawaki Forest on 100 acres of land are underway, contributing to the sustainable rejuvenation of the dump site. The Corporation has engaged a consultant agency to prepare detailed project reports for the envisioned Solid Waste Management Projects.
