Privatization of Solid Waste Management in Chennai Zones Approved
The Tamil Nadu Infrastructure Development Board has given approval for the privatization of solid waste management in Thiru. Vi. Ka. Nagar and Royapuram zones in Chennai, utilizing the public-private partnership (PPP) model. The plan includes the operation of an integrated waste processing facility in Kodungaiyur for 25 years under PPP.
Once the government grants administrative sanction, private concessionaires will handle garbage collection and disposal in the specified zones for a duration of 10 years. The move aims to address the aging workforce issue, as many existing employees are approaching retirement. While the decision has faced protests from workers concerned about job losses, officials anticipate improved service delivery through this new arrangement.
