Kilambakkam Bus Terminus Design Faults Criticized by Disability Rights Alliance
The Disability Rights Alliance (DRA) has released an audit report highlighting design and construction flaws in the newly built Kilambakkam bus terminus, with regard to accessibility for persons with disabilities. The report, based on an access audit conducted by DRA members and other NGOs on September 15, points out various deficiencies and violations of accessibility guidelines.
The audit identifies issues related to flooring, ramp structures, drinking water facilities, dormitory design, toilet amenities, signage, and wayfinding to lifts and escalators. Notably, the terminus lacks fundamental features like dropped curbs for wheelchair users, adequate space between bus bays for wheelchair accessibility, and level boarding requirements for universal passenger facilities. The report calls for immediate rectification of these shortcomings, emphasizing the need for accessibility compliance, even at this late construction stage.
