Tamil Nadu Launches Kalaignar Mahalir Urimai Thittam for Women Heads of Families
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin inaugurated the Kalaignar Mahalir Urimai Thittam (Kalaignar Women’s Rights Grant Scheme) in Kanchipuram, which will provide Rs 1,000 per month to women heading families. ATM cards for beneficiaries were also distributed during the launch, which coincided with the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister and DMK founder Anna Durai.
This scheme was a pre-election promise and a prominent feature of the DMK party’s manifesto. Over 1.63 crore applications have been received, with 1.6 crore deemed eligible. The government has allocated Rs 12,000 crore for this initiative. Eligibility criteria include a family income below Rs 2.5 lakh, land ownership restrictions, and electricity consumption limits, with one woman member of the family designated as the beneficiary.
