Chennai to Resume Encroachment Removal Drives Near Waterbodies Ahead of Monsoon
The Greater Chennai Corporation and other agencies in Chennai, India, are preparing to resume eviction drives to remove encroachments near waterbodies on government lands and poramboke land (communal land). This decision follows a meeting of the State Steering Committee scheduled to review the progress of encroachment removal efforts.
The civic body plans to intensify enumeration, eviction, and monitoring of encroachments as the monsoon season approaches. While some encroachments have been delayed due to legal issues and resident opposition, officials aim to clear areas such as Thiruverkadu and address over 5,000 encroachments along the Adyar River. Authorities are also exploring the possibility of in situ redevelopment in certain areas without compromising flood preparedness.
