Kilambakkam Bus Terminus in Tamil Nadu Meets Barrier-Free and Inclusive Design Norms
The Kilambakkam bus terminus in Tamil Nadu has been constructed with barrier-free and inclusive design features, ensuring accessibility for persons with disabilities, according to the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA). The facility includes provisions for wheelchair accessibility, tactile flooring, and designated accessible toilets in line with universal barrier-free design standards.
CMDA officials noted that they are committed to inclusive design in all civic infrastructure projects. Advocacy groups, including the Tamil Nadu Association for the Rights of All Types of Differently Abled and Caregivers (Taratdac) and the Disability Rights Alliance (DRA), had previously raised concerns about the lack of amenities for individuals with disabilities. They called for thorough inspections and audits before the terminus’s official opening, with input from disability rights organizations and government departments.
