Georgia Declares October as ‘Hindu Heritage Month’ to Acknowledge Community Contributions

Governor Brian Kemp of the US state of Georgia has declared October as ‘Hindu Heritage Month’, recognizing the valuable contributions of the Hindu-American community. Following the lead of states like Texas, Ohio, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Florida, Minnesota, and Virginia, Georgia’s decision aims to honor Hindu heritage, culture, values, and traditions. October holds significance as Mahatma Gandhi’s birth month and features major Hindu festivities such as Navratri and Diwali.

The proclamation highlights Hinduism’s role in providing solutions to life’s challenges and serving as a source of inspiration. CoHNA, a Hindu advocacy group, welcomed the move, thanking Governor Kemp and citing the efforts of the Hindus of Georgia PAC. In contrast, the group criticized the recent anti-caste discrimination bill passed in the California Assembly, deeming it a “black day for California history.”

Notably, Georgia had earlier passed a resolution condemning Hinduphobia and anti-Hindu bigotry, reinforcing the religion’s principles of acceptance and mutual respect.
