Indian-American Candidate’s Campaign Sign Vandalized with Racist Image in North Carolina

Sarika Bansal, an Indian-American candidate running for a town council seat in North Carolina, was shocked to discover that one of her campaign signs had been vandalized with her face “scratched off” and replaced with an image of a Black person’s photo.

If elected, she would be the first Indian-American and second woman of color to serve on the Cary Town Council. The incident occurred in the Highcroft Village neighborhood in Cary’s District D, where Bansal is running for a council seat. The act of vandalism and racism drew strong condemnation from Bansal, who emphasized the importance of embracing diversity and unity in the town.

Cary’s Mayor, Harold Weinbrecht, stated that the incident would be investigated, expressing the town’s commitment to its values. Cary’s municipal election is scheduled for October 10.
