Deadly Wildfire in Maui Becomes Most Fatal US Fire in a Century
A devastating wildfire that tore through Lahaina town on Maui island, Hawaii, has now claimed the lives of at least 93 people, marking it as the deadliest fire in the United States in a century. The fire has caused extensive damage, destroying over 2,000 buildings, mostly homes in the Lahaina area. Firefighting crews continue to battle flare-ups in both the Lahaina and Upcountry Maui fires.
Hawaii Governor Josh Green warned that the death toll might rise significantly as forensic work progresses in identifying victims. This tragedy has surpassed the toll of the 2018 Camp Fire in California, which claimed 86 lives. Reports also suggest that warning sirens did not sound before the fire hit the town, according to Hawaii’s emergency management records.
