Iran’s President Raisi Asserts Commitment to Nuclear Deal Discussions and Sanctions Countering

Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi emphasized the nation’s dedication to dignified discussions regarding the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal while simultaneously striving to counteract the effects of US sanctions due to a lack of trust in “the other side.” Raisi made these remarks during the closing ceremony of the 21st National Media Festival of Iran, coinciding with National Journalist’s Day on August 8.

He reiterated Iran’s adherence to the nuclear agreement, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), signed with global powers in 2015, which involved curbing Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for lifted sanctions. However, the US withdrew from the deal in 2018 and reinstated sanctions on Iran. Talks for the JCPOA’s revival started in April 2021 in Vienna but have not yielded a breakthrough since the latest round of negotiations in August 2022.
