The project between Chennai Beach and Egmore for the fourth railway line hits a hurdle
The project to construct a fourth railway line between Chennai Beach and Egmore stations is facing obstacles due to land acquisition issues. Southern Railway sources revealed that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has refused to part with 250 sq. meters of land required for the project. Additionally, the State government is yet to issue a revised Government Order (G.O.) for the allocation of 2,875 square meters of land along the Cooum Bank. The land allocation is meant to compensate for a one-time payment in exchange for the required land.
The fourth railway line is crucial to improve train operations, increase the frequency of long-distance and freight trains, and cater to the growing passenger traffic. Currently, there are three lines between Chennai Beach and Egmore, with two dedicated to suburban trains and one used for long-distance and freight trains. The introduction of a third coaching terminal at Tambaram further emphasizes the need for a fourth line between Chennai Beach and Egmore.
This additional line will facilitate better train services and the operation of trains originating from the Tambaram terminal. However, without the necessary land acquisition, the project’s progress is uncertain. The acquisition of land along the Cooum Bank remains pending, hampering the project’s advancement. The successful completion of this railway line is essential for enhancing transportation connectivity and efficiency in the Chennai region.
The Southern Railway is actively working to resolve the land acquisition challenges to proceed with the project. A fourth railway line will benefit commuters and contribute to the smooth functioning of train services in the area. Overcoming the hurdles in land acquisition is crucial to realizing the full potential of this railway infrastructure development.
