Bank card usage at automatic fare gates in the CMRL phase II project

Chennai Metro Rail is set to introduce bank card usage at automatic fare gates in phase II of the project. This move aims to eliminate the need for standing in queues to buy tickets or recharge travel cards. Commuters will be able to use their debit or credit cards directly at the automatic ticket gates for fare payment. CMRL officials are working on implementing a full-fledged open-loop ticketing system.

The National Common Mobility Card, recently launched, will be integrated into this system. The gradual discontinuation of tokens is planned as part of the transition to the open-loop ticketing system. The new system will enable commuters to pay for their fares conveniently and swiftly, bypassing the ticket counter. This initiative is a response to previous complaints about glitches in fare payment through WhatsApp and QR codes.

With the open-loop ticketing system, CMRL aims to enhance the overall commuting experience for passengers. The phase II project is expected to witness improved efficiency and reduced waiting times due to this innovative ticketing system. The introduction of bank card usage will provide greater convenience and ease of travel for Chennai Metro commuters.
