New Delhi, Jan 8 : Somdev Devvarman's epic victory over former number one Carlos Moya in the Chennai Open augurs well for Indian tennis, Sports Minister MS Gill said here today.
"I'm absolutely delighted by Devvarman's victory over the great (Carlos) Moya, a fine world class player. This win of Devvarman gives Indian tennis new hopes. Devvarman might be the man," an elated Gill told PTI.
Devvarman registered the win of his life when he tamed Moya 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinal of the ATP event.
Assuring that the upcoming talents would get all kind of assistance from the ministry, Gill said, "As the Sports Minister, I'll continue to support all the new talents, boys and girls, in tennis." Gill was upset at Rohan Bopanna not making to the main draw of the event and felt the player should have been given a wild card.
"Bopanna is coming along very well and he should have been given a deserved wild card in Chennai," Gill said.
