Kamal Haasan's Unnai Pol Oruvan

Kamal Haasan’s ‘Unnai Pol Oruvan’, a remake of Bollywood hit ‘A Wednesday’, is undoubtedly one of the most awaited movie of this season and proves to be a true reflection of a common man’s anger against Terrorism. It is an honest outburst of anger from ‘the son-of-the soil’ against mass killing in the name of Jihaad.

Kamal Haasan plays the protagonist against the terrorism. The hero’s objective gets revealed only in the second half until then the audience mind rolls with inquisitiveness what and why is the hero plotting against the police and the public. Mohan Lal plays the role of a commissioner. The audience gets engrossed with this character and empathize the Predicament a commissioner goes through from the hands of Power, Politics and Public.

UPO takes away the conventional screenplay and Cliché characterizations, infact the hero of the film is seen seated on a chair throughout the film but still pulls the audience to the edge of the seat. The credit goes to the Debutant Director Chakri Toleti. He deserves a pat on his shoulder for setting the story straight forward and not moving out of the template.

The political satire over the Telephone with Chief Minister does not fail to impress and there are many gripping moments in the film, especially when the Task Force officer (played by Ganesh Venkatram) plots the operating site of the Hero. Mohanlal plays his role with ease and proves why he is considered as one of the best actors in the game. Veteran actress Lakshmi plays the role of the chief secretary, often putting up indifferences with the commissioner depicting the reality.

This is the first full length Indian feature film to be shot completely in RED One format and Cinematographer Manoj Soni has handled it well.

The Music is by Shruthi Haasan, the tiger’s cub got to be tiger and yes she leaps 16 feet. The back ground score is commendable.

UPO is a movie to sensitize people against the injustice to the Public in the name of terrorism and does the terrorist’s statement “Gujaratla vandhu modhi paaru theriyum” insinuate about someone? If you want a simple movie yet get wired then watch Unnai Pol Oruvan.

I have already seen Wednesday and the performance of Naseerudin and Anupam. I gave them a score of Excellent A for acting and the suspense. UO is just a mediocre film. Kamal did not look and act like an ordinary common man. Mohanlal and Lakshmi showed some spark of good acting. Music is just so so by Shruti Haasan. The new director did a good job. Perhaps, those who did not see the Hindi original movie found UO as very impressive. Although, I was disappointed. Don't waste your money on this movie!

With his ridiculously phony accent when he slips into English, too much blah blah blah in every call to the police chief, affected gestures and gross overacting, Kamal Haasan just does not allow for the buildup of the suspense and tension the way Naseeruddin Shah did so beautifully in A Wednesday.

The film fully keep you in the edge of the seat. In this period how actors concentrated more in their films. Kamal is the best actor no doubt. When you do a remake, the job is in many respects easier because you have a ready-made story, you know how the ‘original’ actors played their roles, you know what worked in the original et al. Of course, the job is also harder if you are following a Naseeruddin Shah or Anupam Kher. But that’s why these stars Kamal/Mohan are paid such high sums - to deliver excellence, not to dish out mediocrity.

My worst fear was Kamal himself. One of the best features of the Hindi version’s success was Naseer’s suave, calm, understated, under-emoted acting. His words, his accent, his demeanour - everything conveyed what he stated perfectly - just another common man. And I feared if Kamal could do that - I had no doubt about his talent and prowess, but the problem with Kamal is he HAS to emote/strain/overact some place in his movie. Hi, I am Tamil based in US. I never watch Tamils movies. I think Tamil movies are crap and unbelieveable. Cmon 1 guy beating up 20 guys. Suddenly dancing and signing songs. I used to be ashamed of Tamil films. However I saw this film because my friend told me that this was not like normal Tamil movie. Upon watching I would say this movie is really a good improvement for Tamil movies. This is the kind of movies which Tamil movies should make if they want to be internationally famous. The movies had great dialogue, good belieavable story line.

Kamal just reflects the sentiments of most of The IDIANS. When Raj Kapore says "I breathe cinema, I eat Cinema, and I sleep cinema" I could't fully understand the meaning. But after seing Kaqmal I can understand the real meaning. The only drawback is UPO can be fully enjoyed only by people who has English knowledge. This could have been overcome by TAMIL sub-title.

as a great fan and follower of kamal haasan sir.., i would say its an awesome movie..... but i would say you , sir as a crazy fan of yours,,, we could n't see you in the movie completely., we could n't see you in half of the film... however mahan lal ji did a fabulous job... we missed you.... anyway the dialogues, the screenplay, carried the story and the thema towards perfection..... casting in the movie is classic.... to be more precised the two cops along with lal ji..... What a film ? An Actor-Star Like Kamal who has given an effortless neat portrayal as a common man, along with Mohanlal's subtle performance. It deviates from our Tamil Cinema's formulas but has given an uplift for tamil cinema. Kudos to Kamal for presenting this to tamil audiences especially for those who has'nt seen "A Wednesday". Great performance by Kamal& Lal and each one in the film performs well.The film is technically very sound and we can be very proud of such a film. For a dubutant Shruthi Hassan's a surprise package, she will have to deal with mounting expectations from now on. Fantastic Job especially in Background score !! It's easily one of Kamal's masterpiece, brilliant dialogues by Murugan, very crisp narration, i can go on and on about this UPO. With no heroine, songs, comedy, action sequences an actor-star like Kamal yet again proves his versatlity and why he stands out from others. The film also breaks yet another unwritten rule that a tamil film should run for 2 and half hours atleast, it's length is less than 2 hours. Overall it's a path breaking effort ! Now it's upto the audience to make these kind of films a superhit ! Fingers Crossed !!!

Unnippool Oruvan... Wow... Amazing hours.. Few questions to Dr. Kamal Sir and Director: 1. When Kamal sir told Mohanlalji about the bomb in Anna Saalai poilce station, why the inspector incharge was not brought into the picture seriously? The initial dialogues revels there was a search for toilet. 2. When there is no bomb set in the city, why should keep the empty bags? Logically no need if I am right. In the last scene, when Mohanlalji was asking Kamal sir to use his police vehicle to get dropped, WOW...!!! the expression of Kamal sir that he expressed his genuine anger and did his duty and he don't want any further proceedings. A fear, A hesitation, An urge to escape from the police, A common men's attitude of keeping away from Police and Court of law.... MY Thousands of appreciations to Dr. Kamal Haasan... That few seconds worth for the entire movie.... Great Going Sir.. Keep it up.

An eye opener for many. If this movie is not becoming a hit, i would say that people here are stupid. people who goes behind mass masalas should see this movie for the standard it has brought to tamil cinema. No words to express the acting standards of Kamal and Mohanlal. The cops were good too. But Mohanlal was exceptional as ususal. No wonder people think dat Mohanlal got more importance than kamal. The climax which the BEST ACTORS IN INDIA(Kamal& Mohanlal) comin together in screen was amazing. 10/10

What an excellent movie it is. yesterday i saw the movie and absolutelt i am dummed. what a movie. with no love songs and fights and just telling the people, better see than i tell much about the film. Kamal sir you are really great. i am not a fan of you but a person who comments on good films. I really salute you that you have brought good information to the people around the world what to know and especially even though you are a big hero and legend still you gave importance to mohanlal the other legend who proved himself. do be honest the worth movie to watch by all people barring the fans in mind and its good treat for everyone. better see in theatre and with full concentrtaion and enjoy every minute . i would give the mark for the film 100% undoubtedly.

sorry guys- yesterday- i saw the movie- unfortunately its not even up to the minimum standard- its dead slow-it lacks tempo which is essential for this kind of fast paced movie- it seems i was watching mohanlals movie- unfortunately i can't say anything about kamal and his daughters music-unfortunately the reviews from many online news media sites and from magazines is quite misleading-please dont waste your time and money-movie clearly lacks the tempo and speed-kamal was trying to make quick money out of this venture- only people to gain is mohanlal and venkatesh-kamal reason for taking terrorism in his own hands is shocking and the language and words used to depict the reason - makes everyone look less intelligent and stupid-this movie would have made money only for kamal- i am sure everyone including me and the distributors have lost-Joke1 - kamal never looks like a common man which he has to project in this movie-just buying tomatoes in the market- can never build this image- he still looks acts like a big hero-joke 2- control room set up by the police is a big laugh- lacks creativity- it looks like an internet shop or a computer class room- cant understand what they do looking at laptops ( may be watching google maps to locate the terrorist)- come on kamal stop taking people for granted-4/10

we watched this movie today. though v are at canada we feel the touch of india and pain of terrorism in the movie. diologues are great and sharp. the comments of tamilnadu during 26/11 is a real heart felt and true too. we did not bothered about fellow indians and were tailing behind tamils at srilanka.
