Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Eppadi: Movie Review

Debutant director Balaji Mohan hasn’t attempted to narrate a complicated script and instead has opted for a happy-go-lucky affair in Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Eppadi (KSE).  The film turns out to be a fun-filled movie on the ups and downs of romance and the couple involved in it.  It dwells deep into the mood-swings, ego, quarrels, patch-ups and understanding the couple goes through in their lives while realizing the value of their relationship.

Mohan’s depiction of the mentality of today’s middle-class lovers is admirable and realistic.  The movie seeks to convey the strongest message yet in the mildest of manners urging couple in love to first pay heed to each other's emotions and try to adjust to the situation.

The script narrates the story from the hero's perspective: how he falls in love, how the misunderstanding brews with his ladylove and the events that make up their romantic life, etc.  The movie opens with the couple breaking up and then proceeds further with flashback mode showing the events leading to the break up and how they got attracted towards each other.

College-goer Arun (Siddharth) falls head-over-heels in love with Parvathi alias Paru (Amala Paul) who studies in the same college.  At the outset, they start off as mere friends.  As they spend quality time together, they realize that slowly they develop mutual special feelings for the other.  While Arun’s parents are friendly with them, Paru's parents don’t want them to stay as a couple.  These conflicts make the couple finally fall apart, forcing them to even file for divorce.

Though both of them feel the pangs of separation, their over-powering ego and lack of clear communication of their thoughts and ideas play spoilsport in uniting them.  Arun’s loyal friend not only makes him realize his wrong-doings but also motivates him to initiate efforts for breaking the ice with Paru.  However hard Arun might try, his efforts fall flat. When all hopes of re-union disappear, the turn of events forces the lovers realize their true love for each other and this realization makes them come together again.

The onscreen chemistry between Siddharty and Amala is good.  In particular, Siddharth's energetic screen presence and the ease with which he slips into his character are the film’s pluses.  Amala Paul's pleasing looks and convincing performance make the movie a treat to watch.

Balaji’s script is aided to a large extent by catchy and sharp dialogues.  The portrayal of various kinds of romance between the lead pair, their quarrels, reunion, etc. has been portrayed well thereby reflecting the current trend among middle class youth.  What the movie lacks in is the in-depth analysis of relationships.

The conflict between Paru’s parents and the subsequent misunderstanding between the couple doesn’t look too logical.  Parvathi’s emotional imbalance and Arun’s foolish behavior in dealing with the ups and downs of their love lives could have been dealt with in a better manner by the script-writer.  The twist just before the climax sequences hardly appears convincing.

Siddharth signals his grand comeback to Tamil films by his admirable performance.  Amala Paul looks pleasing and has done a rather neat job.  Other supporting cast which includes Ravi Raghavendar, Suresh, and Balaji have done their roles equally well.

Nirav Shaw’s cinematography and Thaman’s background score and peppy numbers give the movie a pleasant feeling.  Being a debutant, Balaji has done reasonably well in depicting the contrasting nature of boys and girls in a nice way.

It’s time for all those in love and planning to fall in love to flock to the theatres to watch the film and enjoy!
