Gomathi Amman temple

Gomathi Amman TempleSankarankoil in Tirunelveli district is replete with legends and lore and this hallowed spot is thronged by devotees, throughout the year.

Special significance of worshipping Goddess Gomathi

There is a circular hole in front of the Sanctum Sanctorum of the Goddess with a design of Sri Chakra inside it. There is a popular belief that any one afflicted with mental disorder worships the deity sitting on the hole he or she is cured of the disease

Naga Sunai

This water tank was dug by the kings Padma and Sanka to ensure daily supply of water for the abishekam of the deities. This water has curative properties and is a panacea for all diseases. Having a holy dip in the waters vouchsafes good health. .

Faith can move mountains they say. The barren couple is blessed with a progeny on worshipping the celestial couple.

Spatika lingam

There is a Spatika Lingam like the one in Rameswaram. and abishekam is performed to it regularly.
The gopuram of the temple reflects the Dravidian architecture and is said to be the second highest gopuram in South India. There used to be clock which showed the astronomical timings but now it is not in a working condition.
The Cholas, Cheras and the Pandyas have contributed to the growth of the temple.

The Tamil month of Aadi is carnival time as the temple festivals are celebrated in a grand scale. Devotees throw sugar and salt in the holy tank hoping that their aliments will disappear as the offerings that are dissolved in water.

Further to my message on August 17, 2010, I have just returned from Sankaran Koil after attending the magnificent function of releasing the book of sacred hymns on Sri Gomathy Ambal in the form of Songs composed by my beloved Grand mother Mathusri Kunjammal Chandrasekhara Iyer (1862-1965) together with an Audio CD containing 15 songs selected from the book sung by noted singer Charulata Mani, on December, 29, 2010. The book and audio CD were released by Sri Rajamani Dy. Commissioner HR & CE and the first set was received by Dr.S. Subburaju of Sankaran Koil. The pleasant function and the elaborate Puja were arranged by the descendants of the family. The function at Sankarankoil went off very well with grand puja to Sri Gomathi Ambal for four hours and the songs of my Grand mother describing the splendours of Ambal sung by the younger generation of the ladies of our family reverberating before the Sanctum. It was an emotionally charged occasion for about 25 members of our family gathered from various places to fulfill the desire of the old lady. Mathusri Kunjammal had given birth to twelve children, but only six of them survived to live long. I belong to one of these six families.Though She wanted to publish her songs in a book form for distribution among the devotees of Ambal in Gomathi Amman Koil, some how she could not accomplish the task during her life time. Now her grand children and great grand children living in India and abroad took up the task of completing her desire.

My grand mother (Late)Mathusri Kunjammal alias Meenakshi ammal Chandrasekhara Iyer was a great devotee of Gomathi Ambal. She has composed many beautiful songs on Ambal which came out of her lips effortlessly after her daily puja. Though she is not with us now, the grand children and great grand children have taken interest to fulfill her desire by publishing her songs in a book form and record some of them sung by an eminent singer in Audio CD to place them before Ambal. Arrangements are being made to release both the book and Audio CD at the Holy Abode of Gomathi Ambal this December (December 2010).
