Madambakkam Dhenupureeswarar Temple

Tucked away from the din and bustle of the crowded Chennai is a tiny verdant hamlet called Madambakkam near Tambaram.

Nestled amidst velvet green paddy fields this temple is ancient and the presiding deity Dhenupureswarar and his consort is - Dhenukambal. This area is called Madambakkam as the vimana of the temple is in the form of Gajaprishta and belongs to Thunganai madam thus Madambakkam.

It is also called Chaturvedi Mangalam as many vedic pundits who mastered the four Vedas resided here.

Kamadhenupuri

This sacred area has different names .Let us see as to why it is called Kamadhenupuri. A resident of this area had a cattle herd One particular cow of the herd played truant. It emptied the milk on a particular spot instead of providing him milk. Angered by this behavior he stoned the cow's hooves and it started bleeding profusely. Not knowing what to do he consulted the elders of the village who took a vow not to hurt the cattle here after. The cow became better and the bleeding stopped at once.

At this juncture the cow took the form of Sage Kapila and a Shiva Lingam appeared from under the earth at the place where the temple is now built. The cow ( Kamadhenu) showered milk on the Shiva lingam everyday in this place and hence the place called Kamadhenupuri and the presiding deity is called Dhenupureeswarar.

There is no Rajagopuram at the entrance of the temple. As we enter the temple there is a Kodimaram which welcomes the devout.

(To be contd)

Its a Great Temple. My only wish is that there should not be any caste discrimination, showing favourtism to big shots for performing pujas etc should be avoided. It would be really great for Hinduism if priests from other than Brahmin community were allowed to perform pujas.

It is a beautiful historical temple which is aged now more than 3000 years. In each of the pillar you could find the beautiful Idols with typical carving and it depicts 108 temples' idols where you will be blessed by 108 idols if you completely pray around the temple and there is no tower for the temple which is not possible for any architect to build it.

My Father R.Natarajan MES Defence officer bought 3 grouds of land in my Mother Rajammal's name and my Name Ramgopal in the year 1971. He wanted to sell it for his last daughter's marriage in 1979. A Malayalee Man working with ICF and having only Gobar gas plant in his house in Madambakkam and living close by our piece of land try to help selling our land and undercut the price for Rs6000/- and finally got it registered in his name. I visited him with my younger brother in 2002 but he refused to recognize us. I really like that place and want to buy a house there.

I have constructed a new house in Madampakkam. The temple is really fantastic. It's great to a historic monument near your residence. My parents love the temple and so do I. A visit to this temple makes my mind tense free. I kindly request people to avoid pollution (plastics), let's save the history for our next generation. Jai Hind....

The temple is the centre of attraction to madambakkam. It provides a divine environment and serenity to the madambakkam village.Every Sunday evening the temple attracts and invites a lot of devotees in and around chennai to be a part of the ceremonial pooja done to glorify the lord sarabeswara, the lord rewards for your faith and consistency by bringing your dreams and wishes into a reality. The residents of madambakkam enjoy the ambient environment everyday as its a healthy sight to see a lot of walkers and joggers in their tracksuits and shoes. Gifted with a sweet perenial ground water and greenary madambakkam market value had reached sky rocketing but still affordable prices during the last five years. With its proximity to OMR which is about 30minutes drive madambakkam has become the bull's eye to many techie's in their hunt to fetch a piece of land. The only way to share what i have experienced as narrated above is by way of making a visit to this historic palce "Madambakkam"

Not many people use to visit this temple, until 1989-90.It was barely lighted and was pitch dark even in day time, with threat of snakes moving in and around. All of a sudden with the discovery of a diety "sarabeswarar" in one of the pillars, drew crowd from many parts of Chennai and outskirts. It is believed that regular darshans to "Sarabeswarar" on Sundays continuously for some fixed period, between 1630hrs to 1800hrs,will have your prayers answered, hence crowded. The temple's popularity grew on this count. Best time to visit and appreciate the peaceful serene of this temple is any Non-sunday.I hope the natives of Madambakkam will agree with this fact.

Madambakkam Sri Dhenupureeswarar Temple nowadays is famous for Sunday, Sri Sarabeswara Poojai, during Evening Raaghu Kalam 4.30 to 6.00p.m. I have seen very huge crowds during this pooja. It is now transforming in to a Prarthana Sthalam. Even I heard that it is of rich archaeological importance which have got various histories. It is now under the administration of an EO of HR & CE Department. Good temple with awful presiding deities. Thank you
