Vijayakanth's latest offering 'Mariyathai', directed by Vikraman, was
expected to be a different movie from Vijayakanth. Everyone was expecting it
to be another Vanathai Pola, which was a blockbuster.

Unfortunately,
Vikraman's
Mariyadhai has
no potential to
create such a
magic, as it has
come out as an
outdated film
with outdated
treatment. It is
quite obvious
that the
director doesn't
move with the
times. The
subject - father
Vs son,
modernity Vs
tradition, and
village virtues
Vs urban life -
is nothing new.
The director
could have still
given a new
treatment to
make things look
new but he has
miserably failed
to do so. As a
result, he has
tried our
patience and
wasted our time.
Vijayakanth plays double role - a rich farmer Annamalai and his son
Raja, who is conned by his fiancée Radha (Meena) of 150 acres of prime
land. His new love-interest Chandra (Meera Jasmine) sets right all his
problems and everything ends well after making us continuously yawning.
Surprisingly, Vikraman has incorporated many scenes and dialogues
that have political undertones to give political mileage to the hero.
The director, who is known for his family sentimental drama sans
politics, has given in to the pressure to make it a movie to fit the
political designs of his hero.

One cannot find any fault in Captain's acting. He has done justice to
his roles, which are not at all challenging. Meena, as always, has done
her part well. Meera Jasmine looks old and renders an average
performance. Ramesh Kanna's comedy makes us cry.
Vijay Anthony's music leaves much to be desired. And there is nothing
in the other departments like cinematography to write about.
Overall, Vikraman has chosen a boring subject and told it with a
pathetic script. The movie is so dull that it would be a futile and
painful exercise to go in to detail.
