A good break for Arya?

With makers going in for Tamil titles, here’s yet another film that has had a change of name. ‘Auto’, the Arya-Pooja-starrer, has had its name changed to ‘Oram Po’. The film, directed by the husband-wife team of Pushkar and Gayatri, has Arya playing the role of an auto driver. The director duo has been inspired by Chennai’s midnight races by some auto drivers. When the city sleeps, the races go on, with not many people being aware of it. For Arya, this action-oriented script should be a turning point in his career. And, of course, there is director Bala’s ‘Naan Kadavul’, which is expected to catapult the hero to centrestage. Bala had done it with Vikram and Surya earlier. And there is no reason why it should not happen with Arya too.

Sunder C.’s next film

‘Sphadikam’ the Mohanlal–Urvashi-starrer was a very big success in Kerala. The film was also dubbed in Tamil as ‘Yudham’ and released in the city. Now the film is being remade in Tamil with director Sunder C. playing the lead role. Titled ‘Veerappu’, it’s likely to have Gopika playing the heroine. A crucial role was played by Silk Smitha in the earlier version. And it’s Tejashri who is slated to play it in the Tamil version. The film touched on the father-son bonding, the crucial role of Thilagan being played by Prakashraj. For Sunder C., who proved himself a fairly competent actor in his very first film ‘Thalainagaram’, this film, with its action-oriented script and judicious mix of sentiment, should be an ideal vehicle to tap his potential as an actor.

Copycats

Titles of old films are being re-used for new films. Like the recently released ‘Thiruvilaiyadal’, the Dhanush-starrer. Yet another new film of Dhanush goes by the name of ‘Pollathavan’, the title of an old Rajinikant film. And now it’s ‘Nenjam Marappathillai’ the Kalyan Kumar-Devika-Muthuraman-starrer that is the title for a Parthiban-Nithya Das film. There seems to be a paucity of ideas around. It's not just in the matter of titles. Old Tamil films are being rehashed and being remade with today’s actors. Old songs are ‘remixed’. There seems to be a paucity of talent all round. Even cinematographers are shown some Hollywood films and asked to follow the tone and the feel for quite a few Tamil films.

Vijay elated with Pokkiri

With ‘Pokkiri’ leading at the box-office, Vijay is naturally elated. The reticent hero was caught in one of his rare appearances on an English TV channel. Never mind if his answers were all in monosyllables! He was all over the print media too. After a trip to the US, Vijay is back to shooting for his new film ‘Azhagiya Thamizh Magan’. And he has two screen sizzlers sharing frames with him: Namita and Shreya, both of whom are starring with Vijay for the first time.
