Certain roles are taboo for heroines. Like that of a hooker. So, when Sneha played the role, quite removed from soft demure
roles, in the film ‘Pudupettai’, eyebrows were raised. But the actress got her share of applause for her guts to perform it, and
well too. Now it’s Sangeetha who is playing a prostitute in her new film. The actress, who, after her bold portrayal of a widow
who tries to seduce her young brother-in-law in ‘Uyir’, is now all set to play the hooker in ‘Dhanam’. Says Sangeetha, “When
heroes play negative roles, they get praise. But when an actress tries to do a role with negative shades, she is criticised. Why the
double-standards, laments the actress, and rightly too.
Ilayaraja scores
An experimental film is being made in Kerala. Titled ‘Ajantha’, the film is being made in four south languages simultaneously.
And composing the music for all four languages is Ilayaraja. Reportedly, the maestro has composed about 36 songs for it. The
film has the hero as an aspiring music director, while the heroine is a blind girl. The star cast is different for each language and
Ramana plays the hero in the Tamil version.
Rehman and Vijay team up
Talking of music, A R Rehman had composed music for a Vijay-starrer long back in ‘Vdaya’, a total failure at the box office.
And now the music wizard is all set to tune for the second time for a Vijay film. Titled ‘Azhagiya Thamizh Magan’, the film is
produced by Appachan. The Malayalam film-maker has also produced a couple of Tamil films like ‘Friends’ where again Vijay
was the hero, sharing frames with Surya. ‘Azhagiya Thamizh Magan’ is being directed by Bharathan, who had worked with
director Dharani. A Vijay film has always managed to attract distributors, for the actor is regarded a safe bet at the box office.
And with Rehman lending his name to the project, it sure is a more commercially viable proposition.
Bharath on a roll
His boy-next-door looks and his spontaneity in emoting have earned him praise from the critics and the audience. And his
films coming in quick succession one after the other, Bharath has no dearth of offers. Among the half-a-dozen films he has in
his kitty is ‘Koodal Nagar’. And in this film paired with him are Bhavna and Sandhya. ‘Koodal Nagar’ is directed by first-timer
Seenu Ramasamy.
