Kanchivaram, directed and written by Priyadarshan with Prakash Raj and Shreya Reddy in the lead roles will premiere for the first time in Vijay TV this July 30, 2009 at 7pm. Kanchivaram is a story of a poor weaver whose hard work is not recognized as he is underpaid and all his dreams are seen to be in a mist is carved neatly by the director Priyadarshan.

"To date it is my best work and this film is a creative arrogance", comments Director Priyadarshan.

The story begins soon after the year India got its independence in 1948. Vengadam (Prakash Raj) an aging man is released from the prison and on his way back to his hometown Kanchivaram, he recalls his past symbolically as several events that occur in the bus remind him of his past.

Prakash Raj, a hero to a beautiful script along with Shreya Reddy supporting the story in all aspects as a heroine, the story takes us back to the period of independence.

The film also reveals how communism has become a forefront movement in contemporary India.
