That Subramaniapuram is a smash hit is an old hat. The latest on the movie is that it has spread its reach by getting some screens in some of the leading multiplexes.
It was not surprising that a 'small' film like Subramaniapuram written, directed and produced by debutant M. Sasikumar, featuring almost all newcomers could not get good theatres when it released on July 4. The trade pundits thought it was one of the small budgeted films that would vanish within a week. But Subramaniyapuram, with its strong content, powerful performances and smart execution proved everyone wrong and became a big hit with the help of mouth campaign. It has been running to packed house all over the state and emerged as a top favorite among all centers.
The success has made everyone stand up and watch. The film has got multiplexes like Sathyam and Inox in Chennai, from today (July 25). It is worth mentioning here that these centers are considered as prestigious centers, where every 'big' film trying to get a slot or two.
At Mayajaal during its first week the film was given only two shows, in the second week it became six shows and in the third week it increased and became 12 shows! The collection, according to the theatre sources, is 100 percent in weekends and between 85 to 90 percent during week days.
In Shanti theatre complex on Mount Road it was released in a small screen. But after a week, due to uncontrollable crowds it was shifted to the bigger screen.
The film was released with just 58 prints. By the end of the third week, the number of prints increased to 126. It is also doing well in Malaysia and Singapore. The low budget film set in 1980, is expected to garner Rs 15 to 20 crore from theatricals, television and other rights.
The stunning success has once again proved that it is not the size of the budget but the content that counts. Last year we had film like Mozhi and Chennai 600028 making the same statement. Will the leading heroes and filmmakers reflect upon this phenomenon?
