Not all film festivals are glamorous. Indian Council for Child Welfare, Tamil Nadu’s (ICCW-TN) Children’s Film Festival is one such film fest which is organized not to promote a particular genre of movies but to raise funds to provide for the destitute and deprived children.

A week-long activity held every year in the month of July is scheduled from the 12th to the 17th of this month. "One of our major fund raising efforts, the Film Festival has been held at the Woodlands theatre every year for the last four years. A new movie is screened everyday between 0900 and 1230 hrs”, explains Vidya Reddy, member of the organizing team.

ICCW-TN a non-profit, non-governmental voluntary organization is a part of National Network of State councils which works with the deprived, disabled and disadvantaged children in Tamil Nadu. Since 1953. it has touched the lives of close to 10,000 children.

Finding Nemo

"We have had an overwhelming response from various schools across the city, who have nobly contributed to this cause,” informs Vidya. About 7,000 students from various schools are expected to attend this film festival next week. “Tickets are available at a subsidized rates. About 200 seats are allotted exclusively (free of cost) for the disadvantaged children.”

“This we believe is a more personal and direct effort on behalf of a child to help his peer. That’s why we call it the "children helping children effort"’, smiles Vidya. To me, it seems like a perfect chance to miss school and still make a difference. And for once even mothers wouldn’t mind their children missing school and who knows they might want to join too.
