The International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) showcased today the much-awaited world premiere movie 'Yuva' (Hindi) and 'Aayitha Ezhuthu' (Tamil), by the renowned director,
Mani Ratnam during the Singapore IIFA Weekend on May 20th 2004. This is the first time that a Tamil film has been chosen for the IIFA World Premiere.
Launched four years ago at the Millennium Dome,
London, the IIFA Awards presentation ceremony is the highpoint of a
three-day extravaganza - the Singapore IIFA Weekend 2004 - which showcased the best of Indian cinema and provided a platform for interaction between the Indian film industry and the global media.
In IIFA's five years' journey, this was the first time that a Tamil film was premiered. Yuva stars Ajay Devgan, Vivek Oberoi, Abhishek Bachchan, Esha Deol, Kareena Kapoor and Rani Mukherjee while Aayitha Ezhuthu stars
Madhavan, Surya, Siddharth, Esha Deol,
Trisha and Mira
Jasmine.
The IIFA World Premiere was held on May 20th at the Lido Cineplex @ Shaw House. The event, which was attended by prominent Indian Cinema personalities and global glitterati began with a Red Carpet welcome and concluded with a star-studded celebration. Previous IIFA World Premiere films included the classic
Lagaan that went on to win an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign film,
Aankhen that is now being remade into a Hollywood blockbuster and
Armaan, directed by Indian Cinema's foremost scriptwriter, Honey
Irani.
Mani Ratnam's production company Madras Talkies has previously produced films like Nayakan (1987), Anjali (1990), Dalapathi (1991),
Thiruda Thiruda (1993), Bombay (1995), Iruvar (1997), Dil Se (1998) and
Alai Payuthey (2000).
Singapore IIFA Weekend was held from May 20th till May 22nd, 2004 and it comprised the IIFA World Premiere, IIFA Foundation Football Match, IIFA Forum and the spectacular IIFA Awards.
The International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) is an institution that brings together the worlds of Indian and International cinema on one common global platform.
IIFA has grown from a one-day awards ceremony in its inception year 2000 to a three-day weekend of festivities today.
The Academy's main objective has been to develop and promote relationships between film industries and organisations across the world.
