French
Cancan |
It's a family affair. The Menard family have a ritual: every week they meet at Henri's cafe and have dinner in the best restaurant of a provincial suburb. This week there's a fly in the ointment: Arlette, Henri's wife misses the roll call. She is gone off for a week "to think things over". On regular scale of events it's no big deal, but it builds up and spills over into other areas. A family is like a gift - once you have been given it, you pretty much have to keep it...
Classical movie: French
Cancan, dir. Jean Renoir with Jean Gabin, Maria Felix, Francoise
Arnoul.
Renoir's homage to Paris of the Belle epoque. Danglard, talent scout and producer of shows, launches the career of Nini, a young laundry girl born on Montmartre, and works his way through various obstacles and jealousies. His new dance hall, the Moulin Rouge, becomes the temple of the new, provocative French Cancan.
