Made By Women, India's first international women's film festival, will open in Chennai on 2nd April 2004 at the South Indian Film Chamber in Chennai at 1830 hrs.
This women's film festival is a first-of-its-kind in India -- and travels to the seven biggest cities in March-April 2004. Made By Women started in Mumbai on 5 March and travels via Delhi,
Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Thiruvananthapuram to Bangalore - where it ends on 23rd April.
Made By Women showcases the work of five women directors from 2-6 April at 1830 hrs at the South Indian Film Chamber each day. The festival aims to celebrate the talent, spirit and drive of women in cinema.
The following international award-winning features are being featured:
The Apple Director: Samira Makhmalbaf (Iran)
FIPRESCI Award, Special Mention, Locamo International Film Festival
The Apple was made by Makhmalbaf when she was only 18. This was her first film.
Sweetie Director: Jane Campion (Australia)
Nomination, Palme d'Or, Cannes Film Festival
Sweetie is the first film of Oscar-winning director Jane Campion, best known for The Piano.
36 Chowringhee Lane Director: Aparna Sen (India)
Grand Prix, Manila International Film Festival
This landmark film won best actress awards for Jennifer Kendal, and is Apama Sen's first film.
Daisies Director: Vera Chytilova (Czech Republic)
Special Prize: Outstanding Contribution to World Cinema, Karlovy Vary International Film Festival Made in the '60s, Daisies was banned by the Czech government shortly after its release.
La Cienaga - The Swamp. Director: Lucrecia Martel (Argentina)
Alfred Bauer Award, Berlin International Film Festival
Director Martel's first film has become a rage on the international film festival circuit.
Made By Women also pays tribute to the first woman filmmaker ever-French producer-director Alice Guy, who made films in 1896, a century ago!
The festival will show rare archival footage of the films of Alice Guy on the inaugural day.
Made By Women is presented by Star Movies, India's leading movie channel. Other
sponsors include Mama Cash, based in the Netherlands, and the Global Fund for Women.
The festival is organized by Point of View in association with the Federation of Film Societies of
India and the ICA Forum.
Point of View is a Mumbai-based non-profit organization that promotes the points of view of women through media, art and culture. Its initiatives mainstream women's rights through photo-exhibits, documentary videos, public service ad campaigns, theatre performances, publications and interactive curricula.
Established in 1959 with world-famous filmmaker Satyajit Ray as President, the main objective of the Federation of Film Societies of India is to spread the film society movement in the country and to create audiences for better cinema.
