By H Ramakrishnan LAW (of the jungles) AND (dis) ORDER

No amount of explanation on behalf of the Police can justify what happened in Pasumpon Village, and that too, a day after Jayalalitha received a death threat over her continued opposition to the LTTE,.

She is not only the leader of one of the large parties of Tamil Nadu, not only a former Chief Minister, but is the Leader of the Opposition. While the police maintain that adequate security was provided, it is a mystery how the crowd managed to smuggle stones near the high-security memorial, which is thronged by leaders of various political parties to pay homage to the highly revered leader Thevar. The Police will have to explain this lapse. After all, this was not an event arranged all of a sudden. The police had enough and more time to plan security arrangements.

Jayalalitha is right when she said that there was a total breakdown in the law and order situation. This incident is ample proof that police is having no control on law and order in the state. Only a Law of Jungles can permit such happenings.  Three cars, including Jayalalithaa's vehicle, were damaged in the incident and ten persons, including three policemen were injured in the stone-pelting and lathi charge. What better proof is necessary for the prevailing disorder?

Additional Police reinforcement should have been sought and got before the incident and not after.  Her security level should be reviewed and enhanced without any further delay. Those who indulged in violence should be brought to book.
