Assam court issues notice to BCCI
Hailakandi (Assam), March 31: A district court here has issued show-cause notice to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) asking why it should not be directed to stop all financial grants to the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) for allowing its affiliate units to initiate legal proceedings against the board. The show-cause notice was issued by civil judge M Rahman on a petition moved by Hailakandi Cricket Association, which is an affiliate of the Assam Cricket Association.
Observing that there was a prima facie case in favour of the petitioner, the judge, however, refused to grant any injunction, but fixed the matter for hearing on April 7. The petitioner had sought ad interim injunction restraining BCCI from giving any financial grant to TNCA for its failure to keep control over its affiliate units.
The affiliate units had allegedly initiated a series of frivolous litigations against the parent body resulting in loss of revenue of more than Rs 150 crore, mainly from the TV rights of the cricket matches. A few smaller cricket clubs in Tamil Nadu, all affiliates of TNCA, had initiated a number of cases against the BCCI and its former president Jagmohan Dalmiya in Chennai on various issues.
The cases were filed during and after the bitterly fought election of the board at the annual general meeting in Kolkata in September last year in which Maratha strongman Sharad Pawar had lost by a narrow margin to Dalmiya's candidate Ranbir Singh Mahendra. (Agencies)
