So when
did you
start your
own dance
school?
When I was
Rajesh,
Kalakshetra
directed
3students to
me and I
started
taking
classes in
Manapakkam.
I value my
first
students a
lot as even
after I
became
Lakshya,
they valued
my art more
than
anything
else. Later,
3 students
became 33
and I was
enthralled
by the
growing
strength of
my class as
all those
showed the
fruits of my
achievements
and hard
work. Now
I’am worried
that I’am
growing old
day by day,
but I’am
still a
2year old
Lakshya.
(Smiles)
Can you
tell
something
about your
choreographies?
One must
choreograph
according to
the trend of
the
audience.
Kalakshetra
always has
the
traditional
style and I
didn’t want
to limit
myself only
to the
traditional
Bharatanatyam.
Swati
Tirunal’s
Alarshana
Paripapam, a
Padham is my
most
favorite
piece. An
artist must
entertain
others and
that is the
Dharma of
dance. I’am
trained in
almost all
forms of
classical
dance and I
can easily
choreograph
contemporary
dance,
cinematic
dance and
folk dance.
I perform
along with
my students
at various
corporate
shows. I
have also
performed
for the
Chennai
Sangamam and
have
performed
overseas in
Belgium,
Germany,
Thailand,
Srilanka and
the Reunion
islands. I
write
scripts and
do theatre
too. So a
lot of NGO’s
approach me
to do
theatre and
dance-drama
for them.
The theme
usually
revolves
around HIV
AIDS,
Transgender,
Homosexuality,
Social
awareness
themes,
Tsunami etc.
I grabbed
all these
offers and
while
writing
scripts, I
notice the
daily
happenings
and put
forth the
society’s
role into
it. I’am not
a ‘Sabha’
person. My
ideas are
enough for
me and I
believe in
my art and
that is more
than enough
for me.
Don’t you
think you
are being
over
ambitious?
Yes
I’am. But
what is
wrong in
that? I know
I have art
inside me
and I know I
can stand on
my own legs
even now. I
have earned
a name with
so much of
hard work.
Thanks to
God as he
made
everything
smooth for
me in life.
What is
one thing
that people
would notice
in Lakshya’s
performance?
People say
I’am very
graceful.
They would
also notice
my
expressions,
choreography
and the way
I present.
But I can
say that my
grace stands
out.
Who are
all the
dancers you
admire?
I
prefer old
dancers to
new ones. I
like
Vyjayanthi
Mala Bali
for her
confidence
and power,
Padma
Subrahmanyam
for her
timing,
Swarnamukhi
for her
creativity
and flexible
body,
Rukmini Devi
for her
perfection.
What is
your dream
in life?
My dream is
to direct a
movie,
something
like
Sankarabharnam
which has
both music
and dance in
it. I love
literature
movies and
that is why
I was drawn
towards this
movie.
Though
Salangai Oli
and
Chandramukhi
have come, I
want to make
an all
together
different
movie which
speaks about
dance and
dance alone.
Can you
tell
something
about the
awards you
have
received?
I have got
the
T.S.Parthasarathy
Award for
the best
dancer in
the Spirit
of Youth
contest,
Magalir
Murasu award
for the best
women
achiever,
Bhavalaya
Mrutha Ratna
Award title
from the
Manarkudi
Sabha. I’am
also a
graded
artist of
the
Doordharshan.
How did
movies
happen?
I
got a call
from
Director
Mysskin for
the movie ‘Nandalala’
as a second
heroine
where the
character is
that of a
transgender.
I rejected
it
initially,
but later
accepted the
role as I
fell in love
with it.
Mysskin is a
superb
artist and
the film
revolves
around
‘Love’ and
mine is an
important
role. I come
in the
climax only
and the
movie will
be released
in a month’s
time. I’am
also playing
the role of
a
transgender
in a Tamil
movie called
‘Arthanaari’
produced by
Sai
Creations
and directed
by Vijay
Ram.
Shooting
will
commence
from July
and I play
the lead in
it. It will
be a worth
waiting
movie.
