Sanjeevanam: Chennai’s health-food restaurant

SanjeevanamThe term “health food” conjures up images of raw veggies and herbal drinks, something that cannot be really had for pleasure. But visit Sanjeevanam (Nungambakkam), Chennai’s health-food restaurant and the concept gets a whole new meaning. What’s great about this place is that it is not just a restaurant but a therapy centre as well, that packs in Ayurveda treatment, stress-relief massages, and a course on hatha yoga.

No fancy setting or exotic menu, Sanjeevanam dishes out food that is good for your body. It is a feast for the kings only that the fare is low on oil and spices. Four courses of surprise await you. Wondering what’s in store? Well, wait a few minutes, as the nutritionist first talks about healthy eating.

SanjeevanamWatch in awe as the waiter lays out a banana leaf and starts serving the meal with the first course being juices from various vegetables and herbs. By the time you are done with the last one, you are smacking your lips, ready for more. A lot of thought and research has obviously gone into the place, for they serve food in a specific manner.

Raw salads, followed by semi-cooked vegetables, cooked daals, vegetable curries, and rice come along. Banana flower raita, beetroot and carrot salad, polished rice are some of the items you get to taste. You round off the meal with delicious kheer and a glass of water. Yes, no water till the meal is complete. There are about 26 items in the menu.

As you walk out, you realise you actually enjoyed the meal. Tempted?
