It was an evening of laughs and some humor. Chennai witnessed a humorous play after a long time. Titled ‘An Idiot for Dinner’, ‘evam’ along with the ‘Boardwalkers’ presented this play. Right from the starting scene till the end, one will have a hearty laugh. Directed by Michael Muthu, this play is an adapted from the French movie ‘Le Diner De Cons’ which was later made into the famous Hindi movie- Bheja Fry.

The story’s protagonist R.Golden Gopu (Sarvesh Sridhar) is the idiot of the story. Sanjay Khelavkar (Praveen Bharadwaj) and his friends meet every week for a dinner where they invite an idiot and ridicule them and the host with the biggest idiot wins. The best part is that till the end of the dinner, the idiot never figures out who the joke is on. R.Golden Gopu, being the guinea pig that week is an income tax officer who has a fascination of making matchstick models of the wonders of India. Sanjay twists his back just few hours before the dinner and picks up a fight with his wife Aparna (Uttara Krishnadas) who leaves home in a fury. Gopu comes to Sanjay’s house and the whole evening goes out of control. Sanjay’s wife finds out that he has a mistress and the later threatens to commit suicide. The situation also lands poor Sanjay in an income tax audit. As things go haywire, the attitude of Gopu irritates Sanjay. How Sanjay and Gopu fix the whole problem along with Sanjay’s friend Sameer (Gibran Osman) and a tax inspector Hari (Iswar Srikumar) forms the rest of the storyline.
Sarvesh as Golden Gopu is definitely the show stealer here. His body language and his acting skills are just excellent. Praveen and Iswar’s acting were also very good and their acting at certain scenes received a lot of applauses from the crowd. Gibran and Uttara do a decent job here and have essayed their roles very well. The sound effects, sets and the lighting need a special mention here as it increased the flavor of the whole dinner! On the whole, An Idiot for Dinner is a rib-tickler and a must watch.
The play is being staged again on the 27th of June, Saturday at 3.30pm and 7.30pm at Sivagami Pethachi Auditorium, Mylapore.
