Tirupur, May 17:  According to the reports coming in a woman died after a bus reportedly driven by a temporary driver hit her in Tirupur, police said. The bus coming from Dharapuram dashed against some persons, killing an unidentified woman and injuring two others, police said.

The driver was identified as Vijayaraghavan, a former TNSTC employee with bare minimum experience who was working in a bakery in Dharapuram.

With ten transport unions affiliated to various political parties, including DMK and left-wing outfits, participated in the strike, many buses across the state remained off roads yesterday. Officials came up with alternative plans to clear the rush with private buses pressed into service in Chennai and other parts of the state.

As the transport strike enters second day yesterday, inexperienced drivers were creating chaos on the roads unaware of the routes and fares. In Trichy, the government was so desperate to defeat the strike that it approached sand truck drivers to join private school bus drivers in operating government buses.
