With every second film released these days projecting the hero as a simple youth forced by circumstances to take to the gun, it looks like there are no better ways to project the macho image of a hero, than to depict him as a gangster! 'Bhagavathi' is the new one on the list. While the first half moves fairly smoothly, in the second half the script takes a nosedive from which it never recovers.
A tea-stall owner, Bhagavathi's sole aim in life is to make his brother a doctor. But Guna's falling in love with a politician's daughter Priya, results in Guna being brutally killed by the politician's henchmen. Bhagavathi who vows to protect Guna's beloved and the baby in her womb, joins hands with the politician's rival, takes to the gun, and violence becomes his way of life.
Vijay plays Bhagavathi with his characteristic restraint. Of particular mention is the scene where he first confronts his tormentor. And forgettable is the train-fight sequence where he lets out those war cries. Reema Sen provides the oomph, Monica as Priya is all sweetness and smiles. Debutant Jai (nephew of music director Deva) projects convincingly the innocence and timidity of Guna. Of particular mention is cinematographer-turned-actor Ilavarasu as Vijay's mentor Singhamuthu who's slowly growing in stature as an actor to reckon with.
