The
story centers on the conflict between the idealistic Muthazhagu
and his father Alavanthan, a corrupt minister. Alavanthan, with
the support of his avaricious sons-in-law and a coterie around
him, is more into making money than doing good for the peeple.
Muthazhagu, who heads the youth wing of the party, rebels
against their acts but there is only so much he can do. The
tables are turned when he fights the election as an Independent
candidate, defeats his father and gets the Home portfolio. And
from the seat of power, he now sets out to cleanse the system.
The
scenes breeze through without leaving much impact. A remake of
the Malayalam film, 'Lion', no effort has been made to adapt it
to suit a new audience. And whatever little changes have been
made, what we get to see are again clichéd scenes and
stereotyped characters.
There
are a couple of punch lines for Sarath, the film coming soon
after his re-entry into politics. Sarath plays the rebellious
son without fuss. But he could have brought in some variation in
his body language after the character attains the seat of power.
Karthika, playing Muthuzhagu's love interest, lacks a strong
screen presence. Added to that, the actress looks self-conscious
in those unsuitable glamorous outfits she has been given to wear
in the song sequences.
Nasser
as Alavanthan is surprisingly loud and over-the-top, a far cry
from his natural self.
Incidentally, 'Nam Naadu' and the Rajasekhar-starrer 'Udambu
Eppadi Irukku' (dubbed from the Telugu 'Evadaithe Nakenti')
are both remakes of the Malayalam film 'Lion'. And both were
released the same day. But Rajasekhar's film sure has an edge
here, his re-structuring of the script making it more engaging..
